3 Reasons You’re Not Getting the Promotion You Want
We’ve all been there; we wait so long for that promotion, and we are absolutely crushed when it doesn’t happen. If you’ve been wondering, “Why do some never get promoted?” keep reading to learn more about how to nail your next promotion.
It’s a sobering moment for us, and it’s easy to overanalyze and pinpoint the moment it may have gone wrong. Sometimes, being passed over for a promotion simply happens because of reasons outside your control, while other times, you may have overlooked some critical work behavior that may have caused it.
But whatever the reason, it's always a good idea to take a step back and understand some potential pitfalls that could factor into missing that prized promotion. And it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Pew Research reported in 2023 that only 33% of Americans were happy with their opportunities for promotion at work.
To help turn the tide on more people getting promotions, we’ve outlined three factors in this article that might be standing in your way of getting that promotion you’ve always wanted.
Truth be told, there is no magic fix to make sure you get every promotion you want, but by understanding and avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll be able to show your employer that you’re deserving of growth opportunities.
1 | Setting Unrealistic Goals
While it’s perfectly fine to have lofty goals and work hard, we must also be realistic when things don’t go our way.
If you’ve been in your position for three months and you’re upset you aren’t a supervisor yet, you may need to manage your expectations. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect the same for your career.
It takes time and effort to work your way up the ladder, and every good “ladder” within a company sometimes has a few missing rungs that you'll have to take a few steps to overcome. - All that is to say, performance plus patience usually gets you to the finish line.
The flip side to this is that not every job has that much upward advancement. Some jobs cap out at the position you’re in and don’t offer much room for growth. There’s nothing wrong with finding a new opportunity to grow, but don’t be discouraged if you haven’t been somewhere long enough or accomplished enough to warrant a promotion.
2 | Poor Work Ethic
You might think no one notices you coming in late, leaving super early, or turning things past your deadlines, but someone is always watching.
Procrastinating and fooling around on Facebook in between calls are big ways to attract attention — just not the attention you want.
If you want that promotion, you need to work twice as hard as everyone in the room. Make yourself indispensable. If you’re out sick or on vacation, your absence will be missed. That will show your leaders and fellow Team Members just how much they need you.
Showcasing this kind of value within your role is key to being promoted in the future. Be the best at what you do, but it also helps to be good at other peoples’ jobs too. If you want people to look up to you and ask you for guidance, there's no better way to do this than understanding what others do and potentially doing it better.
In all, poor work ethic bleeds through everything you do, and generally speaking, no one with a poor attitude and a lack of motivation should ever get promoted.
3 | Taking Initiative Today
If you wait for orders from a boss, you’ll only sell yourself short and limit your potential.
When looking for someone to promote, your boss looks for those members of the team who don’t have to be reminded or told to work on a project or accomplish a task. If you want to be a leader, you need to lead by example first. Always make sure that you're one step ahead of where things need to be.
You have to show your coworkers and your boss why you deserve a promotion. You also have to have the body of work to back it up. Identify what you do best and become the subject matter expert on it. If you show you’re the authority on something, people will value your opinion, and you’ll have leeway and empowerment from the top down to accomplish new goals.
FAQs
What to do when you’re not getting promoted?
Here’s our advice:
- Work every day toward your goals and don't let failure sabotage your work ethic. Sometimes, slow and steady wins the race , while other times it's good to push yourself outside your comfort zone and reach for new projects and duties that can help set you apart and add value beyond a rigid job description. Just make sure your goals are in line with these two dynamics and you'll be well on your way.
- Take time to be observant of how you portray yourself in the workplace. Don’t be that person who does just enough to get by; be the one who goes above and beyond the call of duty to get things right and done early.
- Try starting something your office always talks about doing but never gets done - you know, the project that no one seems to want to own? If you grab the bull by the horns, you’ll own that and create value for yourself and the company.
Should I leave if I'm not getting promoted?
This really depends on a lot of factors. Ask yourself the following questions to reach a solid conclusion:
- How long have you been with your current company? If it’s less than two years, try not to be too disheartened if you haven’t been promoted yet.
- If you do leave, do you have options lined up with clear progression available? If you’re looking to leave due to missing out on a promotion, it’s wise to consider what other options are available in roles you can apply your transferable skills to. You’ll want to research career routes and growth opportunities in other industries and roles to avoid the same disappointment next time.
How do you deal with the disappointment of not getting promoted?
While it's true that not getting the promotion you wanted may be disappointing, just remember that there’s always a silver lining. You might realize afterward that the role just wasn’t right for you.
On the other hand, you might realize this company isn’t for you, and your talents can be better served elsewhere. Remember, we can’t let the setbacks tear us down; we must keep pushing forward.
